The most lasting Twilight Zone episodes were the ones where the character discovered the reality they’d been accepting wasn’t mandatory. The rules they’d been obeying applied to a different situation. The constraint was descriptive of a past moment.
The door was always unlocked. The character had been making choices inside an imagined constraint for so long that the constraint became the architecture.
That’s the identity lag. The person at Day 1 had different restrictions than the person at Day 126. The work has been done. The evidence exists. But the internal narrative often still operates from the original room. The door is unlocked. Try the handle.
